The Chernobyl arch into place over the reactor building

November 30, 2016

Unique engineering feat concluded as Chernobyl arch has reached resting place

Gepubliceerd op 29 nov. 2016

Thirty years after the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, the radioactive remains of the power plant’s destroyed reactor 4 have been safely enclosed following one of the world’s most ambitious engineering projects.
Chernobyl’s giant New Safe Confinement (NSC) was moved over a distance of 327 metres from its assembly point to its final resting place, completely enclosing a previous makeshift shelter that was hastily assembled immediately after the 1986 accident.

The equipment in the New Safe Confinement will now be connected to the new technological building which will serve as a control room for future operations inside the arch. The New Safe Confinement will be sealed off from the environment hermetically. Finally, after intensive testing of all equipment and commissioning, handover of the New Safe Confinement to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant administration is expected in November 2017.

Innovative skidding
Mammoet skidded the arch from its construction site to the reactor building using a skidding system that has been specially designed for the project. The innovative and award-winning skidding system is fully remote-controlled and consists of 116 skid shoes with an average capacity of 700 tons each. The skid shoes were completely synchronized on both sides of the structure to ensure a smooth and even operation. The tracks of this system were installed in a 33 degree angle to optimize the load transfer onto the foundations.

About the New Safe Confinement
The New Safe Confinement replaces an old shelter that was installed as an emergency measure to contain the radioactive materials in the destroyed unit shortly after the disaster in 1986. It provides a controlled and weatherproof environment where the solid radioactive remains of the destroyed unit can be held for the next 100 years. At 165 meters long, 260 meters wide and 110 meters tall, the arch could house the Statue of Liberty, or the Notre Dame Cathedral. With a weight of approximately 36,200 tons, the shelter is about three times as heavy as the Eiffel Tower.

Lots of Solar flares

October 22, 2014

What’s up in space

During the past 48 hours, monster sunspot AR2192 has unleashed seven M-class solar flares. The most powerful of the bunch (Oct 22nd at 0159 UT) was an M9-class eruption that almost crossed the threshold into X-territory. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the extreme ultraviolet flash:

UV radiation from the flare ionized Earth’s upper atmosphere, causing a brief blackout of HF radio communications on the dayside of Earth (e.g., parts of Asia and Australia). In addition, the explosion might have hurled a CME into space. Confirmation awaits the arrival of coronagraph data from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). Stay tuned for updates.

More flares are in the offing. AR2192 has an unstable ‘beta-gamma-delta’ magnetic field that harbors energy for powerful explosions. NOAA forecasters estimate at 65% chance of M-class flares and a 20% chance of X-flares on Oct. 22nd.

*Sunset Solar Eclipse

Oct 17, 2014: Sunsets are always pretty. One sunset this month could be out of this world. On Thursday, Oct. 23rd, the setting sun across eastern parts of the USA will be red, beautiful and … crescent-shaped.

“It’s a partial solar eclipse,” explains longtime NASA eclipse expert Fred Espenak. In other words, the New Moon is going to ‘take a bite’ out of the sun.

Solar flare: The sun touches our psyche

(excerpts)

Maybe it is time to wear tin foil on our heads. With high electromagnetic activity from the sun coming this way, our human electromagnetic fields may start glowing.

Even if we do not begin incandescing, scientists have noticed correlations between solar flares and moods.

Solar Effects

From 1948 to 1997, the Institute of North Industrial Ecology Problems in Russia found that geomagnetic activity showed three seasonal peaks each of those years (March to May, in July, and in October). Every peak matched an increased incidence of anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and suicide in the city Kirovsk.

One explanation for the correlation is that solar storms desynchronize our circadian rhythm (biological clock). The pineal gland in our brain is affected by the electromagnetic activity.

This causes the gland to produce excess melatonin, and melatonin is the brain’s built in “downer” that helps us sleep.

“The circadian regulatory system depends on repeated environmental cues to [synchronize] internal clocks,” says psychiatrist Kelly Posner, Columbia University. “Magnetic fields may be one of these environmental cues.”

Psychological effects of CMEs (coronal mass ejections) are typically short lived and include headache, palpitations, mood swings, and feeling generally unwell. Chaotic or confused thinking, and erratic behaviors also increase. Since Tuesday’s solar flare was a double-whammy, it will be interesting to see whether reports of physical disturbances are more intense or more plentiful than during single solar plasma blasts.

Since humans are physically, mentally, and emotionally altered by electromagnetic charges from the sun, it makes you wonder how the bombardment of particles from digital devices affects us on daily basis. All this leads one to think that it might be time to break out the tin foil, but since my cats are not acting any more demanding or nuttier than usual, we are most likely OK.

However, don’t be surprised if next new “plea” in our legal system turns out to be: not guilty by reason of electromagnetic disruption.

X-flare directed at Earth

September 11, 2014

What’s up in space

X-FLARE: Earth-orbiting satellites have just detected a powerful X1.6-class solar flare (Sept. 10 @ 17:46 UT). The source was active sunspot AR2158, which is directly facing Earth. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the extreme ultraviolet flash:

xflare_strip

Ionizing radiation from the flare could cause HF radio blackouts and other communications disturbances, especially on the day-lit side of Earth. In the next few hours, when coronagraph data from SOHO and STEREO become available, we will see if a CME emerges from the blast site. If so, the cloud would likely be aimed directly at Earth and could reach our planet in 2 to 3 days.

Looks like a Heart to me…

Super typhoon takes aim at Japan, emergency warnings issued

(excerpt)

July 2014 – TOKYO – Japan’s weather agency on Monday issued emergency warnings to urge people in the country’s southern islands to take maximum precautions as a super typhoon described as a “once in decades storm” is set to rake the Okinawa island chain with heavy rain and powerful winds. Typhoon Neoguri was already gusting at more than 250 km an hour (150 mph) and may pick up still more power as it moves northwest, growing into an “extremely intense” storm by Tuesday, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said. But it was not expected to be as strong as Typhoon Haiyan, which killed thousands in the Philippines last year. The JMA issued emergency storm and high sea warnings for Japan’s small southern island of Miyakojima, some 300 km (188 miles) southwest of Okinawa island, and for a smaller nearby islet. The agency said on Monday evening it also planned to issue an emergency high sea warning for Okinawa island, host to three-quarters of U.S. military facilities in Japan.

Fukushima Consciousness

March 15, 2013

Wide Awake News/Interview with Karen Quinn-Tostado (and later joined by Charlie McGrath) about navigating with your ‘Moral Compass’ through Fukushima, propaganda, lies, death, destruction, the medical field, hookers (yes, really) and sensory consciousness…and dealing with it on a daily basis. Things seem very messed up but there is a huge opportunity for something wonderful to happen…

Consciousness is the quality or state of being aware of an external object or something within oneself. It has been defined as: subjectivity, awareness, sentience, the ability to experience or to feel, wakefulness, having a sense of selfhood, and the executive control system of the mind.Despite the difficulty in definition, many philosophers believe that there is a broadly shared underlying intuition about what consciousness is. As Max Velmans and Susan Schneider wrote in The Blackwell Companion to Consciousness: “Anything that we are aware of at a given moment forms part of our consciousness, making conscious experience at once the most familiar and most mysterious aspect of our lives.”

One of my favorite interviews. Thank you Karen 🙂

*Fukushima: The monster under our bed.

(excerpt)

We are up against the nightmare boogeyman monster of two generations, finally let loose like Godzilla to wreck havoc on Earth, and the best response we can manage is to still pull the covers up over our heads, hoping it just goes away. It isn’t going away, not ever, because we don’t know how to make it do that. Isn’t that the plot to every Hollywood monster movie, mankind does something just because he can…without regard for public safety, or any clear idea of what to do if it all goes horribly wrong, as it inevitably does. As it inevitably has.

So, here we are with our worst fears fully realized and both the populations and governments involved are curiously silent. The government lies to us about everything, why would we believe anything they say about Fukushima or radioactive fallout? In this case I don’t think we care about the lying, I think we prefer it that way. The nation of Japan today is a mere shadow of the powerhouse country it was just 26 months ago. Both Tepco and the government of Japan have undergone changes in leadership and key personnel, as the nightmare there continues to cascade out of control. Meanwhile the citizens of Japan have little choice but to suffer in place and fend for themselves as best they can, because their government has abandoned them, and much, much worse. We would do well to remember that when it becomes our turn to embrace the horror. Our government has already abandoned us, to think it will come running in to “save” us now is just the height of foolishness.
